Antioxidant Potential and Phenolic Constituents of Mango Seed Kernel from Various Extraction Methods
نویسنده
چکیده
The antioxidant properties of Mango (Mangifera indica cultivar Chok-Anan) seed kernel (MSK) extracted by various extraction (shaking, refluxing, acid hydrolysis) methods were examined by applying 1, 1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and 2, 2-azino-bis (3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS+) radical-scavenging assays and antioxidant activity using the ferric thiocyanate test (FTC). All three methods proved that extraction methods affected the antioxidant potential of MSK extracts. The antioxidant capacity of the acid hydrolysis extract had the highest value and was significantly (P < 0.05) higher than that of α-tocopherol, which is the commercially used natural antioxidant. Their phenolic composition (saponin, flavonoids, anthraquinones and tannins) and total phenolic content were also determined. The total phenolic content of MSK from different extraction methods varied between 90.03 and 285.70 mg of tannic acid equivalents per gram dry weight of product. Both flavonoids and tannins were major contributors to the phenolics in MSK. This research suggests that the extract has potential as a natural antioxidant.

The Stabilizing Effect of Three Varieties of Crude Mango Seed Kernel Oil on Tallow
Considering the possibility of the harmful side effects of synthetic antioxidants, it is necessary to substitute the synthetic antioxidants by the natural ones, the antioxidants that have been consumed by man for years. The mango seeds were washed and air dried and the kernels were removed manually from the seeds. Mango seed kernel oil was extracted by hexane using soxhlet extraction apparatus....
متن کاملAntioxidant and Antimicrobial Capacity of Phenolic Compounds of Mango (Mangifera indica L.) Seed depending upon the Extraction Process
The extraction method is critical for the recovery of phenolic compounds. The main goal was to evaluate the effect of an extraction process from mango seed on their phenolic profile, antioxidant and antimicrobial capacities. Phenolic extraction was performed in different steps: maceration, alkaline hydrolysis, acid/alkaline hydrolysis, polar and non-polar fraction of an ethyl acetate separation...
متن کاملEvaluation of the proximate composition, antioxidant potential, and antimicrobial activity of mango seed kernel extracts
After pulp extraction in fruit processing industry, a significant quantity of mango seed kernels are discarded as solid wastes. These seed kernels can be ideal raw materials for obtaining extracts rich in bioactive compounds with good antioxidant properties. The conversion of these wastes into utilizable food ingredients would help in reducing environmental problems associated with processing w...

The aims of this study are to determine and compare the antioxidant levels and activities (i.e. primary and secondary) between selected seeds of Malaysian tropical fruits - guava (Psidium guajava), mango (Mangifera indica L.) and papaya (Carica papaya L.). Seeds are among byproducts from the processing of fruitsbased products. Instead of discarding seeds as waste, seeds with high potential as a...
